I’m still trying to wrap my head around today’s events and how utterly amazing they were.
I usually tell people that marching in a pride parade is the most liberating experience you will ever have. Now I’ve marched on Washington. I marched right up to the White House and demanded equality with over 150,000 of my LGBT and allied siblings.
I have to admit that I had grown a bit cynical about the struggle for equality. After coming out almost 10 years ago, I dove into the work of LGBT activism. I was there for the creation of Equality Alabama, I’ve been on boards and on advisory committees. Eventually I burned out and left activism to people who still had some drive left.
Before the march, earlier this year, I didn’t think it was a good idea. It wouldn’t accomplish anything.
I was wrong.
If anything, this march was the kick in the pants that I and possibly 1,000’s of activists needed to start putting pressure on our congressmen and women and our local and state legislators.
Demand equality on every level.
We’re at a unique time in history when so much is within our grasp. It lies just outside our fingertips and if we can reach just a bit more.. they are ours for the taking.
I’ll be telling some stories from this weekend over the next few days. I hope you’ll still be reading.
