Ice Cream, You Scream

Monday, August 20th, 2007

Baskin-Robbins is coming back to Birmingham.  I don’t know why the company pulled out in 2002, but I guess it’s hard to be the “world’s largest ice cream chain” if you ignore large metropolitan areas.  B-R’s Pralines & Cream kicks ass, but it’s going to be tough to lure me away from Bruster’s and its yummy Key Lime Pie.

Could this mean that Dunkin’ Donuts will also return?  That would make Dear Husband happy, but I’ve never found any doughnut that can rival Krispy Kreme.  And here’s a little tidbit just for Jennifer and Dr. Renée: Krispy Kreme now has whole wheat and multigrain doughnuts.  That’s just wrong!  :)

ADDENDUM:  Andre had it first — Dunkin’ Donuts is coming back too.

Happy Birthday to Me!

Happy birthday to me!

Road Trip

Sunday, August 5th, 2007

We’re off to North Carolina for a few days of R&R and a visit with nephew Zach.  I’ll be posting from the road, and Del will be popping in also.  In transit most of the day Sunday, but I hope to have some good pictures once we arrive.  In the mountains.  Where it’s cool.  Or at least cooler than it is here.

Light Posting Till Later

14YOD gets her wisdom teeth out this afternoon.  I’m filling out forms and worrying right now; once she’s home and heavily medicated, I’ll see what’s happening in the world.

Fun with the iPod

Sunday, July 1st, 2007

The girls and I drove to Georgia this afternoon to visit my mother for a few days.  9YOD doesn’t really care what we listen to, but 14YOD and I sometimes clash regarding the musical selection.  Which is kind of strange, because I think she has pretty good taste in music, and she’s always borrowing my CDs to load onto her iTunes.

She put up with me starting at the beginning of my playlist — at least for a while.  I know my selection is a bit, um, eclectic, and because the list is in alpha order by artist, I might have a country ballad followed by headbanger music.  With about half an hour to go, she finally talked me into letting her choose ”just one song.”  Of course, she wouldn’t tell me which one she wanted to hear; she had to find it herself and surprise me.  I was expecting something new, but she busted out with the Talking Heads’ “Take Me To the River”, the live version from Stop Making Sense.  There’s hope for the youth of America after all.

Anyway, I thought it would be fun to go through and pick out every 20th song on my main playlist, just to see if there is any rhyme or reason to my musical choices:

  • “There’s No Other Way” — Blur
  • “Bell, Book and Candle” — Eddi Reader
  • “My Wild Frontier” — Faith Hill
  • “How To Save a Life” — The Fray
  • “This Town” — James Marsters
  • “Virgin State of Mind” — K’s Choice
  • “Saint Christopher” (Crash soundtrack) — Mark Isham
  • “Stupid Thing” — Nickel
  • “Losing My Religion” — R.E.M.
  • “Possession” — Sarah McLachlan
  • “Misery” — Soul Asylum
  • “More Than Fine” — Switchfoot
  • “The Tower” — Vienna Tang

I’d have to say NO.

Want to try it yourself?  Leave your list in the comments.

I Hope the Place Is Still Standing…

We’re off to pick up 9YOD from her first week at spend-the-night camp.  I expect her counselor will be ready for a long rest.

Happy Summer

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

Today’s the first day of summer, and the weather forecast is dry and hot in Birmingham.  I’m stunned.

Posting will be light today; I have to add to the ground-level ozone by driving to various meetings around town.  Deputy AG Paul McNulty will be testifying in front of the House Judiciary Committee today at 11 am CDT; perhaps he will be able to clarify some of his previous less-than-truthful testimony to Congress.  You can watch on C-Span 3 or listen on C-Span Radio.

Also, check out Dan’s interview on the Matt Murphy show here.

Happy Father’s Day!

Sunday, June 17th, 2007

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there!  If you haven’t already called your dad today, do it now.  This is the first year that I can’t, and I’m reminded of what I miss — the smile in his voice when he heard mine.

Applause, Please!

Saturday, June 16th, 2007

We’ve just returned from a lovely but internet-free week at the beach.  Huge thanks to guest-posters Del and Steve M. for their great work and willingness to jump in while I was gone.  Extra kudos to Del for serving as blogmistress and wading through the spam — it can get very smelly in that particular swamp.

Be sure to keep up with Steve over at his place (and anytime he wants to drop by and post here).  I’m hoping to persuade Del to join the illustrious staff here at the Blues as a regular — that’s if she doesn’t decide to start her own blog.

Incommunicado

Saturday, June 9th, 2007

grayton-beach.jpgMaybe.  We’re off to the beach for a week, and as far as I can tell, we won’t have Internet access while we’re there.  If we get lucky, there may be a wireless hot spot somewhere in the area.

Not to worry, though.  Author and playwright Del, a regular commenter here, will serve as blogmistress, and she will also guest post.  After the weekend, Steve M. from No More Mister Nice Blog will drop by as well.  This will be a double treat: witty observations with a South Alabama perspective and political news from a New York viewpoint.  So please make them feel welcome — leave lots of comments.

I’ll check in if I can, but you’re in good hands.  Enjoy!
