Another descent into salacity

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

I suppose I mean salaciousness, but I like salacity better. Anyway. Mobile is yet again plunged into can’t-look-away horror at the alleged local sex freaks in high places. Steve Giardini, who in addition to working closely with the freaking Child Advocacy Center was actually the head prosecutor on the Spankin’ Judge Hermie case, was just indicted on child porn charges. This has all been coming on for some time, apparently—they raided his house back in April, but didn’t file charges until now. Why? No one knows...etc.

The charges are the usual grab bag of skeeviness involving an FBI agent posing online as a fifteen-year-old girl. But what made me even more uneasy than the idea that THIS MONSTER COULD BE AFTER OUR PRECIOUS CHILDREN was the fact Cialis Online that the FBI dude not only sent 3 1/2 months worth of fake IMs or whatever, he actually talked to Giardini on the phone, using “a device to disguise his voice to appear to be a teenage girl.” Kinda puts you in mind of Minority Report.

Speaking of movies, we happened to be watching a Hepburn/Tracy movie called Without Love the other night. Tracy, spurned by his first love, has said goodbye to romance forever, or so he thinks, and bitterly explains why [at 7:15].  “And the last time I saw her,” he tells Miss Hepburn, “she was wearing a white evening gown, with her curls piled on top of her head, looking about sixteen.”

Boy. They just don’t write ‘em like that any more, do they.

Youth Pastor Sentenced on Teen Sex Charges, Wife Brags that Victim “Apologized” to Her

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

WTF?  Former Word of Life youth minister William David Webb, 36-year-old son of Senior Pastor Scott Webb, was sentenced today for transporting a 15-year-old girl across state lines for sex.  He pleaded guilty back in May in exchange for a five-year sentence.  He’s a child molester (and statutory rapist, although it appears he was never charged with that rape charges were dismissed as part of the plea deal), and his wife is batshit-crazy:

The defendant’s wife of nearly 13 years, Tara Webb, submitted a letter to the court saying she became aware of her husband’s relationship with the victim in August 2007. “He immediately repented and asked my forgiveness,” her letter said. Mrs. Webb said she went to the victim, who worked for her as a volunteer in the church audio department. “She apologized to me and I forgave her,” Mrs. Webb wrote. “I encouraged her and told her to not let it hold her back but to pursue her dreams.” [emphasis mine]

I bet he repented — after he got caught.  And she had the gall to go to the VICTIM, who worked for her, for an apology?  Those two deserve each other.

I hope the VICTIM is able to move on with her life.  I wonder if she’ll ever get an apology — from her molester or his enabler wife.

The ever-widening definition of evil monsters

There are two stories involving child sex molestation in today’s paper. The first, on the front page of Section B, starts off, “A Baldwin County jury took about 30 minutes Tuesday to convict a Robertsdale man for repeatedly assaulting two young children.” By the time you finish reading the story, there doesn’t seem to be much doubt that this guy should get life in prison, which it looks like he will.

The second is on the back page of Section B, underneath the weather forecast. “Baldwin County trial opens in child pornography case.” Okay, so we dive into a second story about victimized children, and discover that this guy, Ronald J. McFadden, didn’t actually involve children in his Class A felony. He cut and pasted adult porn images onto ordinary pictures of kids. “On some of the collages, lewd phrases were pasted.” (more…)

Former City Councilor Pleads Guilty to Child Porn Charges

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

Former Birmingham City Councilor Don McDermott, who was indicted on federal child porn charges in September, pleaded guilty this morning to receiving and possessing child pornography. No sentencing date has been set, but one of the charges carries a five-year minimum.

City and federal agents seized computers, hard drives and other materials from MacDermott’s home in August. They found 129 pornographic photographs and four short videos, all depicting girls.

The defendant, who faces heart surgery later this month, was allowed to remain free on bond until he is sentenced. Coogler ordered him not to be alone with minors and to stay at least 500 feet away from schools and day care centers.

MacDermott also faces a related state child pornography charge, but has not been indicted.

A commenter at al.com asks, “Wasn’t MacDermott a very conservative, Christian Coalition candidate? What happened to him?” My response: “What else is new?”

Spanking Judge Resigns

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

Mobile County Circuit Judge Herman Thomas resigned yesterday, presumably reducing to zero the number of Alabama judges who regularly remove young male inmates from their cells for spankings. Thomas was facing 30 charges of ethics violations and waiting on a report from the Judicial Inquiry Commission that could have, but did not, include additional charges.

Those charges ranged from allegations that Thomas unduly helped his friends or family members with their legal troubles to literally changing the legal status or reducing sentences of convicted criminals after other judges on the 13th Judicial Circuit had already sentenced them…

…In yet another round of allegations apparently sent to the Inquiry Commission earlier this summer — and, according to sources, part of an ongoing criminal investigation of Thomas — he is accused of having routinely checked young male inmates out of the Mobile County Metro Jail, taken them to an office at the courthouse at Government Plaza and spanked some of them with a paddle…

…The Press-Register has reported that four men signed affidavits as part of a federal suit alleging that Thomas tried to initiate sexual encounters with them and threatened them with retaliation in their criminal cases if they refused.

This is no great loss to the bench. It’s not clear whether the Commission will continue to pursue its charges against Thomas, but Mobile DA John Tyson said the resignation will have no effect on his office’s ongoing investigation. A committee will submit three names to Gov. Riley as possible replacements. I don’t see how they could do worse, but it might be good to check the candidates for paddles.

Former City Councilor Indicted for Child Porn

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

Don McDermott, former Birmingham City Councilor for District 1, was indicted today on two federal counts of child pornography. He’s already under indictment in Jefferson County.

You may remember that McDermott was defeated after serving one term — by Joel Montgomery. It’s hard to believe, but in retrospect that looks like a step up.

Assistant US Attorney Charged in Child Sex Sting

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

Actually, I’d call it a child rape sting. I’m not sure why this isn’t 24-hour headline news, but it looks like OJ has knocked it off the radar. Assistant US Attorney John David Roy Atchison of Gulf Breeze FL is accused of arranging an assignation with what he thought was a five-year-old girl. That’s FIVE. YEARS. OLD.

John D.R. Atchison, 53, of Gulf Breeze, Fla., was arrested Sunday at Detroit Metropolitan Airport after several weeks of Internet conversations between the prosecutor and a detective posing as the mother of a 5-year-old girl, authorities say.

Officials said Atchison, an assistant U.S. attorney in Florida, made the trip anticipating a sexual encounter but was arrested instead. He was carrying presents for the girl, including a doll and hoop earrings, and also had sexual materials, including petroleum jelly, Sheriff Mark Hackel said.

A federal grand jury added a charge Tuesday of crossing state lines with intent to have sex with someone younger than 12. Atchison also faces charges of use of the Internet to seek illicit sex and interstate travel to engage in illicit sexual contact. He could face up to life in prison.

Petroleum jelly. Jesus. He also assured the “mother” that he wouldn’t hurt the little girl because he’d had lots of practice and knew how to be gentle.

According to the complaint, Atchison reassured the sheriff’s deputy who was posing as the child’s mother that he would not hurt the 5-year-old because he goes “slow and easy,” and “I’ve done it plenty.”

And to add to the creepy factor, this “family man” coached children’s sports. His MySpace profile might have set off some alarms had the parents seen it:

According to court documents, Atchison — who served as the president of the Gulf Breeze Sports Association, which includes youth athletics like soccer and T-ball — described himself as “very much a family man” in online chats from Aug. 29 to Sept. 16 with an undercover officer posing as a mother interested in letting men have sex with her children.

During continuous conversations, he expressed a desire to engage in oral, vaginal and anal sex with her fictitious daughter. Money was not part of the discussion.

Atchison’s reputation before the arrest is a stark contrast from his MySpace description.

A MySpace page, that a court document said was Atchison’s, said he enjoyed spoiling young girls. Atchison allegedly described himself in his profile as: “Handsome, educated, professional, experienced Daddy. I love younger girls.”

His general interests are listed as “surfing, diving, boating … everything to do with the water … music and cute girls.”

I really do wish law enforcement officials and the reporters who have covered the story would call this what it is — making arrangements to commit rape. One doesn’t “have sex” with a five year old.

****

There’s been lots of online speculation as to Atchison’s political affiliation, which has not so far been mentioned in any news reports I’ve seen. Even the Freepers appear to be conceding that he’s a Republican based on Florida voter registration records (after some initial screeching that the lack of party identification in media coverage had to mean he was a Democrat).  Wev.  If he did what he’s accused of, he’s lower than pond scum.
