Langford Trial Begins Today

Larry Langford goes on trial today in Tuscaloosa, barring any last minute legal maneuvering.  Kyle Whitmire and Madison Underwood of the Birmingham Weekly will be live-blogging beginning at 9 AM.  Langford’s attorneys asked that the trial be moved out of Birmingham because of fears that pre-trial publicity would taint the jury pool, which will now come from ten counties in the Northern Division’s western district.  The trial is expected to last two weeks.

My prediction?  It will be interesting.

Good God, you mean those jurors are going to have to drive in from two or three counties away? Along with the usual hassle of turning your life upside down for jury duty? I’d vote to convict the SOB on that alone. What about people without transportation, what about…oh, it’s nuts. But maybe I just don’t understand how The System works.

I really didn’t understand the change of venue request. Tuscaloosa is in the Birmingham media market, so people there have been getting the same news. And there are people here who know and love Larry (go figure). So, if the media coverage in both Birmingham and Tuscaloosa has been such a negative, why give up the home field advantage? Maybe the change of venue was just another delaying tactic.
