a small proposal

I would like to suggest a minor corollary of Godwin’s Law. We could call it Del’s Dictum, maybe. That in any internet-based argument, the first person to use the word “disingenuous” loses.

If you spell it “disingenious” you lose twice. And I reserve the right to add additional penalties for “intellectual dishonesty” at some future date.

That is all.

Excellent! I’d like to add a penalty for using “srsly” and “prolly” and for misuse of your/you’re and their/they’re/there. Why yes, I am a pedant.

Was there something specific that sparked this?

I think it was a post on Political Wire. I’m just so TIRED of that word, and it gets trotted out to malign the pettiest disagreements. Often by people who, shall we say, don’t have the vocabularian resources to complement that one word.

The “they’re” thing bothers me too, but … I was horrified to find out not too long ago that I’d sent somebody an email with the wrong “to.” I honestly hadn’t thought that was a mistake I’d ever make. Just another one of those misfires that come with the aging of the “little gray cells,” I guess. Anyway, I try to be more charitable now :)

I had to stop to figure out what “srsly” meant.
