Sherry Johnston was arrested by Alaska state troopers yesterday and charged with six felony counts related to “a controlled substance”.
Troopers served the warrant at Johnston’s home at the “conclusion of an undercover narcotics investigation,” said a statement issued Thursday by the troopers as part of the normal daily summary of activity around the state.
Troopers charged Johnston with second-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance — generally manufacturing or delivering drugs — as well as fourth-degree misconduct involving controlled substances, or possession.
The troopers didn’t say which drugs were involved, but, as Louise points out over at Pam’s, Wasilla is the meth capital of Alaska. [ETA: The Anchorage Daily News is now reporting that the arrest was related to oxycontin.]
Bristol’s baby is due tomorrow (which means nothing in the real world of childbirth unless she has a scheduled c-section). She and Levi Johnston are planning to get married next summer. If she were my daughter, I’d be telling her to run as fast as she can the other direction. Or, actually, I’d probably be telling her to marry him right now, today, because she’d likely do the opposite of whatever I said.
Anyone want to bet on whether or not Sarah Palin got a heads up before the arrest? In public, she is making no comment, which is classy. (I’m not sure about the “not a state government matter” — it was a state drug investigation, but I assume it will be prosecuted at the local level.)
When asked about the arrest, Palin’s spokesman, Bill McAllister, issued the following statement by e-mail: “This is not a state government matter. Therefore the governor’s communications staff will not be providing comment or scheduling interview opportunities.”
In private, I hope she’s telling Bristol to skip the wedding, wait a few years, and — should she ultimately decide to marry without having it forced on her at shotgun-point — choose in-laws who aren’t drug dealers. Of course, it sounds like she’ll need to leave Wasilla to do so.
