Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford has been arrested on federal charges:
Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford was arrested this morning on federal charges and is being held at the federal courthouse, the FBI and other federal officials confirm…
…Al LaPierre, a close friend of Langford’s who also was part of the federal investigation, will be surrendering today, said his attorney, Tommy Spina.
The Langford and LaPierre indictment is under seal, so details of the charges are not available.
It’s about time.
ETA: Fox 6 is reporting that the Feds will hold a news conference at 10 AM CST.
Also ETA this from the updated al.com breaking news:
David McKnight, Montgomery banker Bill Blount’s attorney, said Blount is on his way to Birmingham from Montgomery to surrender.
It’s a trifecta!
AMEN! Been watching the coverage most of the morning.
Ha!
You know he literally prayed to Jesus that he wouldn’t get caught. I guess the good Lord doesn’t cotton to corrupt politicians who take bribes and ban gay pride parades while wearing the holier-than-thou robes of a so-called “Christian”.
If only he’d put up a plaque.
Larry loves to hide behind Jesus while spouting rhetoric and doing things that would make most Christians blush with shame. His sackcloth and Rolex ensemble is a prime example. I wonder if Bill Blount’s money paid for that watch.
Maybe the crazy train has finally derailed! In LaLa Land.
And his lawyer was mad he couldn’t “turn himself in” like the other two–maybe a little “sackcloth” humiliation is what he needs, but it didn’t work the first time–sounds like shackles and handcuffs would do the trick. Arrogant s.o.b. Good grief.
I understand he was offered the courtesy of turning himself in last week, but didn’t.
While there is relief that finally the ’shoe has dropped,’ it’s also very sad. There are so many people whose suffering has been increased by inattentive/bad government.
Just one example related to the failure to address homelessness in smart ways: While chronic homelessness numbers were down a bit (2005-7), the percentage of veterans on the streets is up. The number of unaccompanied youth is up. The number of street homeless not fitting the definition of chronic homelessness is up.
Demands for services are rising as the economy falls. And resources are denied while such boondoggles as the Northern Beltline are pushed. I think they call it a “public-private” partnership: the public pays for infrastructure and private interests make the profit. They can’t even pay for road maintenance, nor lights on the interstates, but they can build yet another road. Aroma from the Super Sewer is wafting . . . .
I knew you’d be having a field day with this!! “Bout time you posted something other than a cornucopia!! Hey, if I buy a loft in Birmingham, can I still live in Hoover and be mayor of Birmingham? And buy some nice clothes? Cuz I shop at Wal Mart most of the time!!
Jennifer, Larry was arrested so early that I wondered if the Feds picked him up at his home in Fairfield, but he was already hard at work at Birmingham Budweiser.
Helen is right; this is a sad situation. Langford is a self-promoter who has left chaos in his wake while somehow persuading yet another group of
suckersvoters to give him another chance. Not only has he failed to address the city’s problems, he has made them worse with his fake solutions and attention-grabbing projects that never seem to come to fruition — or at least not profitable fruition. And his questionable grasp of ethics is a terrible example to the people he claims to want to influence. I hope the voters of Birmingham will wise up and elect someone who is honest and competent next time around.
