15YOD and I headed to Trussville this evening for Park Players‘ production of Shadowlands. The cast, headed by Jesse Bates as C. S. Lewis and Sheila Snoddy as Joy Gresham, gave strong performances throughout (several of them in multiple roles). Creative staging and lighting allowed us to travel from Jack Lewis’ home in Oxford to Joy’s hospital room and even to Greece with minimal sets. We cried.  A lot.  One word review: powerful.

Shadowlands runs through Saturday, July 19, at Deerfoot Community Bible Church (July 11, 12, 17, 18, and 19 at 7:30 PM; July 13 at 2:30 PM). Tickets are $15 for adults, with children 16 and under admitted free. Given the exploration of love, serious illness, loss, and grief — and a really funny discussion of theoretical fornication that opens the show — I wouldn’t recommend this show for young children, but my teenager appreciated it. Don’t miss it, and be sure to take plenty of tissues.

Kudos to director Clay Boyce and the cast and crew. Well done!
