Vomit

Gaynell Hendricks won the Democratic nomination for Jefferson County tax assessor yesterday with 60% of the 14% turnout. Some here will remember that this is the same Gaynell Hendricks who did everything she could to overturn Patricia Todd’s election and get herself crowned the nominee in Alabama House District 54. Quoth Ms. Hendricks:

“This is a victory for the citizens of Jefferson County,” Hendricks said from her campaign headquarters on 4th Avenue North. “It goes to show that with hard work, honesty, sincerity, and, most of all, God on your side, we can accomplish great things.”

You’d think if God had really been on her side, God would have made sure she got that House seat she wanted so badly. Oh, and note to Gaynell — invoking God, presumably the Christian God, when the incumbent you defeated happens to be Jewish? Really tacky.

I’m going to go puke now.

****

ETA:  al.com is now reporting that voter turnout might have reached a stunning 15%.  Of course, this may not be an accurate reflection of the Democratic turnout in Jefferson County, but it’s the best numbers I can find so far.

    Tacky? Re-read your post.
I hope you have someone to hold your hair.

That God. Sometimes you get a banana.*

*Long story to explain this one.

Oh Groan!! I’m striking out all over the place. I voted in the Republican primary so I could vote for Jack Hornaday for PSC. I could not believe the results of the tax assessor’s race. It makes no sense. None!

  5. Dan Says:

Jews believe in god. Aren’t they all the same god? Well except the Muslim god of course.

[...] She just got elected to Jefferson County Tax Assessor (which is elected for some…. no, no… that’s another post). If the name sounds familiar, she’s the same lady who tried to undo her defeat at the hands of the Caucasian American Patricia Todd in the Alabama House in 2006. Kathy gives her opinion. [...]

Yes, Dan, I’m aware Jews believe in God. ;) I’m also aware that there are plenty of Christians who think they have an exclusive claim. Thanks for the link!

Sansou, I’m going to blame it on low turnout.

Del, I know just where you’re going with that banana reference.

  8. Del Says:

No you don’t, either. It’s a charming story about Vacation Bible School. Father Nameless encouraged three children to pray for a cookie. Then he handed them three brown paper bags. First child got a cookie - “Sometimes God answers prayers.” Second child got a LOT of cookies - “Sometimes He answers them abundantly.” And the third child, well, now you know the punchline.

I hadn’t thought of the banana as phallic symbol until now, but you’re right, it’s clear that Father was saying “Sometimes God screws you.” Otherwise, he’d have put an apple in there, right?

I think those people who go on TV after a tornado has spared their house (but flattened their neighbor’s) and talk about how they know God’s hand was protecting them should all be given big bags of cookies. And their neighbors, lying on borrowed cots over at the Red Cross shelter, should be given bananas. I can’t think of a better way to help everyone gain a fundamental understanding of prayer and how God is working in our lives.

Thank you Del. Common sense about God is so refreshing.

  10. Kathy Says:

Actually, I thought you were talking about the Kirk Cameron (I think) video that uses a banana to “disprove” the theory of evolution. ;)

  11. John Says:

Everytime I hear some hypocritical politician claiming to have God in his or her pocket, it makes me think of that old Bob Dylan song “With God on Our Side.” They should give it a listen and engage in a little self evalution.

  12. Kathy Says:

Wow, John, those are powerful lyrics. I’m also reminded of Lincoln’s “Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God’s side, for God is always right.”

You’d think believers would be a bit more careful about claiming God’s support for their own political ambitions.

Wow, do you guys anything better to do than to take the results of this race and extend it to the depths of plain absurdity. Its a race, the people voted their choice, get over it. Pat Todd won her race so get over it, it will be time for another race and you guys will still be lamenting the results of the last race.. Get a life.. Move on!

  14. Dan Says:

JeffCo turnout was app. 8.25%, split roughly 50/50 Dem/GOP

  15. Kathy Says:

Dan, that really is pathetic turnout. The voters of Jefferson County should be appalled that they let such a small number of voters make decisions that will affect their lives.
