Turnout

Question for those of you who had a primary today: How was the turnout in your area? I think it’s been pretty pathetic here. I just got back from voting, and the poll workers nearly fell on my neck with gratitude. I think they were getting sick of their own company; this is an all-day-and-into-the-evening gig for them, and they hadn’t had much business. I was the only voter there, and I parked right in front of the door.

On Super Tuesday, I was voter #301 at 8:30 AM. Today, I was voter #227 at 2:40 PM. All I can say for that is it could have been worse.

I was voter 75 at my polling place in Bluff Park at 10 a.m. That’s pretty light. On the other hand, when it comes to party primaries, I would almost rather have a small number of people who think about what they’re doing, than a large number of people who just randomly fill in the circles.

  2. Del Says:

Damn, I almost forgot to go vote. I have a migraine but will HEROICALLY drag myself around the corner to our conveniently located polling place.

  3. Kathy Says:

Lisa, you have a point. I had to do some research before I could go to the polls. Del, feel better! Migraines suck.

I used the al.com site before I went over there. I was surprised at how well set up and informative it was. Drop-down menus with everything I needed to know about the (previously unknown to me) candidates for Court of Appeals.

School board, I knew. Oh, how I knew.

Migraine’s gone now, just that sort of after-echo. They sure do suck.

  5. Del Says:

And yes, turnout seemed rather sparse. I think I was number 174.

  6. Katy Says:

    I was number 156 at 6:30 pm!!!

  7. Joe Says:

Bobby and I were numbers 3 and 4…at 7:30 this morning. We were democrats number 1 and 2.

  8. mooncat Says:

A little over 300 people voted at my precinct where about 2500 voters are registered. Around 100 of us voted on Democratic ballots.

  9. Don Says:

Out of curiosity I went to the al.com interactive ballot site mentioned in your “Vote Tomorrow!” post to see if it would give me the correct information about which House District I’m in, and it didn’t. It said I’m in HD75 but I’m in HD31. People who live on the opposite side of my street are in HD75.

  10. Kathy Says:

Don, did using a 9-digit zip code make any difference?

  11. Don Says:

No, Kathy, it doesn’t make any difference. The people on the other side of the street are in the same zip code as I am, but they are in HD75 and I’m in HD31. These gerrymandered district lines drive people nuts at times. To my understanding (from my house rep) these lines were drawn by the late Representative Jack Venable and for some reason he wanted my side of the street and properties directly behind and to the west of us in his district so the line was drawn right down the middle of the street and through the woods behind houses behind us. The majority of HD31 in this area is behind (to the east of) the houses across the street.

This really hurt the reelection bid I was involved in. I am so despondent.

  13. Kathy Says:

Talmadge, I’m sorry. It’s a tough thing to work so hard for so long and then have to concede to another candidate. I hope your mom is doing okay and that you all get some rest.

I read today in the Wetumpka Herald (http://thewetumpkaherald.com/articles/2008/06/04/news/news01.txt) that the turnout in Elmore County was 27.5 percent of registered voters. Although ill, I drug myself to my polling site just for the opportunity to vote against Paul Hubbert. That may be why a lot of others turned out, too. Or maybe they turned out to defeat 2 of the 3 incumbent county commissioners who were on the ballot, and just miss defeating the third one by 35 votes.

  15. Nancy Says:

    My theory — don’t vote - then don’t bitch.

  16. Kathy Says:

    Nancy, I agree.

  17. Kathy Says:

Don, I hope you’re feeling better!
