Roy Hudson, Alabama Teacher of the Year

This is so cool! Roy Hudson, the theatre teacher at Shades Valley High School here in Birmingham, has been named Alabama Teacher of the Year. The school’s theatre academy just completed its production of “Into the Woods”, a very ambitious show for a high school troupe.

“I’m stunned and honored beyond belief,” Hudson said by phone after a ceremony in Montgomery.

Hudson started teaching high school in 1995 at the age of 42. Before then, he ran his own production company and taught theater at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. His plays and musicals have been produced more than 70 times nationwide.

Congratulations, Mr. Hudson!

Chuck, I’ve had the pleasure of sharing the stage with several of Roy’s students this year. I am not only impressed with their talent but also with their work ethic and positive attitude. He’s a fine example for them, and I know he will be an inspiration for other students and teachers around the state.
