As a gay man, in a 15 year “marriage” to my same gender partner, I was appalled and angered to hear Hillary Clinton say in the LOGO/HRC sit down a few months ago that she is opposed to the complete repeal of DOMA.
DOMA, passed during her husband Bill’s administration, is arguably one of the most draconian and blatantly homophobic pieces of legislation to ever be signed into law by a president.
Hillary Clinton, who was quite late to the LGBT table, stated in the LOGO/HRC sit down that she is only open to the repeal of article 3 of DOMA. It is important to note that both John Edwards and Barack Obama said if elected president, they would repeal 100% of DOMA — kill it outright.
Of course, now that Hillary Clinton is losing her bid to be the Democratic nominee for president, she’s likely to do and say anything. In this 11th hour of the Hillary Clinton campaign, we may even hear her apologize for her pro-Iraq war vote.
Christopher, I hear your frustration, but from reports I’ve seen (many of which never seem to make it into the MSM), Clinton is in no way late to the table on LGBT issues. I don’t appreciate the “she’ll do anything to win” meme, and anyway I don’t see how this helps her with the general public. If anything, it will hurt her.
And, if we’re going to go there, she hasn’t invited a homophobic preacher/gospel singer to campaign for her, and she doesn’t list Rev. James Meeks — ranked by the Southern Poverty Law Center as one of the 10 leading black religious voices in the anti-gay movement — on her website as one of her influential supporters.
Neither candidate is perfect on the issue of LGBT equality. I’m just glad to hear this from her, as I was glad to hear Obama speak out about homophobia in the black church.
ETA: I see you commented at Shakesville also. I hope you’ll read CE’s response on DOMA.
I find it terribly ironic when a straight person lectures me about DOMA.
The fact of the matter stands: HILLARY CLINTON IS OPPOSED TO THE REPEAL OF DOMA — SHE SAID SO DURING THE LOGO/HRC SIT DOWN.
Hillary allowed for the repeal of Article 3 only. Let me repeat, she allowed for the repeal of Article 3 only.
Barack Obama said in the LOGO/HRC sit down that he would throw DOMA out in its entirety.
Now you’re free to spin it anyway you wish by bringing up James Meeks (or anyone else) in order to push Hillary Clinton. But the reality is, Barack Obama has a proven, demonstrated record of support for LGBT rights and equality going back to his days in the Illinois senate. Hillary Clinton can’t claim this legacy for her own.
I’m not lecturing you on DOMA; actually you are lecturing me. I simply asked you to read and consider CE’s response. CE, btw, is not a straight person.
