Snow?

Usually, we fall south of the snow line in Birmingham, but it looks like we might be in for some serious accumulation this weekend. Serious for Alabama, anyway.

I hope everyone has time to go to the grocery store for the obligatory bread and milk. Or beer and chips. If not, the Birminghamster has a suggestion.

Despite what stupid James Spann says, the lack of any significant snow last night can be directly tied to Global Warning. Global Warning is real and we must wake up and stop listening to stupid people like James Spann. We must do something about Global Warning before it is too late.

It started snowing fairly heavily here just outside of Wetumpka at about 9:30 am, and now about 50 minutes later the ground is well covered in a blanket of white.

It’s been snowing here since about 9:00. It was really coming down for a couple of hours, but it’s slowed now. The girls are outside sledding and making mini-snowmen. The dogs are freaking out.

Although, I’m not a fan of James Spann, especially considering he is a member of the Trinity Medical Center board trying to move the hospital, but snow forecasting in Central Alabama is a tricky science. This low-pressure stayed way too far south in the Gulf of Mexico for us to see sufficient snow totals that are going to be seen in North Georgia, Northwest South Carolina and North Carolina. At 8:00AM, the center of the low was located 100 miles south of New Orleans with buoys reporting wind gust as high as 50 mph. Usually, when we have a major snowfall here in Central Alabama, the low-pressure center is located at or extremely close to the MS/AL gulf coast. If this system had came 50 miles further north then Birmingham-Tuscaloosa-Anniston would been under a Heavy Snow Warning with 3-6 inches forecasted as Selma-Clanton-Roanoke saw today.

I won’t argue that global warming doesn’t have something to do with the lack of snowfall seen here for nearly 8 years b/c when I was growing up here we saw a snowfall at least once every 3 years.
