Mukasey Confirmed

Great. The man who won’t say that waterboarding is torture is now the top law enforcement official in the United States.

…Schumer’s fellow Democrats had many questions about whether Mukasey would ever be the right man for the job if he can’t say what domestic and international law has said: That waterboarding is torture and therefore, illegal.

“This is like saying when somebody murders somebody with a baseball bat and you say, ‘We had a law against murder but we never mentioned baseball bats,’” said Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt. “Murder is murder. Torture is torture.”

Yes, it is, and Mukasey’s refusal to acknowledge it means Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, et al, can breathe a joint sigh of relief, knowing they’re safe (for now) from prosecution.

Mukasey says he’ll be his own man. We’ll see.

If Mukasey was going to be his own man he would have given candid answers to the questions about waterboarding. It is clearly illegal and has been recognized as torture since the Spanish Inquisition. Did you notice that none of the Senators running for president even bothered to vote on his confirmation – not even John McCain!
    Wimps.

Hard to believe McCain wouldn’t oppose Mukasey. Oh, wait. No it wouldn’t. He’s been kissing Bush’s, um, ring for years.
