Demonstration In Support of SCHIP

For those of you who live in Alabama’s 6th District, there will be a demonstration in support of SCHIP today from 5:15 to 6:15 pm at the fountain in Five Points South. Bring your children, if you have them, and your signs. Drinks and snacks provided; rain date Friday, same bat time, same bat channel.

In a small bit of irony, I won’t be able to attend because 9YOD has a gymnastics class at that time. And I have a bad feeling that Bush and those who support his veto are counting on parents to be too busy to protest. So, if you’re like me and you have a conflict this afternoon, don’t let that stop you from picking up the phone and calling Spencer Bachus (202-225-4921). Tell him he needs to stand with working families and their children — and with his own Republican governor, Bob Riley, who supports passage of this bill.

Here’s a little more background on SCHIP and the need for this bill, which is in part to remove some draconian requirements that the Bush administration slipped in during the August recess — requirements that no state currently meets. Now that Bush has vetoed the bill, eight governors are moving forward with plans to sue the administration for putting these rules in place without going through proper procedures or providing any notice.
