Nothing Like Being Late to the Party

Monday, September 24th, 2007

Happy second blogiversary (two days late) to Tom Hilton and the rest of the team over at If I Ran the Zoo. It’s my blog-away-from-blog, and the folks there are great. Funny, too, and big Whedon fans. I just tread water most of the time, but I’m glad they let me hang [...]

Unintended Irony Edition

Monday, September 24th, 2007

Dear Husband and I just turned on the TiVo to watch last night’s broadcast of Ken Burns’ “The War”, and we heard these introductory words: “Corporate funding for The War is provided by…”
DH completed that sentence: Halliburton, Blackwater, and the oil companies.
Oops.  Different war.

Military Officers Caught Up in Contract Graft Investigations

Monday, September 24th, 2007

This just makes me sad.
CASTOR, La. — On the fourth Sunday in July, John Lee Cockerham was here in his hometown for the baptism of his twin sons…
…Less than 24 hours later Major Cockerham was behind bars, accused of orchestrating the largest single bribery scheme against the military since the start of the Iraq war. [...]

“Bunnies aren’t just cute like everybody supposes,
They got them hoppy legs and twitchy little noses.

Weekend Reading

Friday, September 21st, 2007

Michael Kinsley on faux Petraeus outrage:
Goodness gracious. oh, my paws and whiskers. Some of the meanest, most ornery hombres around are suddenly feeling faint. Notorious tough guys are swooning with the vapors. The biggest beasts in the barnyard are all aflutter over something they read in the New York Times. It’s that ad from [...]

Protesters from around the country gathered in the tiny town of Jena LA today, marching in support of six black teenagers who were initially charged with attempted murder after they beat up a white classmate — who was badly bruised but still able to attend a school function the same night. The beating was [...]

What’s a Fundie To Do?

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

Uh oh. Looks like someone still hasn’t done enough ass-kissing.
James Dobson has a real problem with Fred Thompson. Back in March, he called the US News & World Report to say that Thompson didn’t fit his definition of Christian (and we all know that God gave Dobson final say on that). [...]

Surprise, Surprise: Troy’s Still Not Apologizing

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

Troy King held another press conference this afternoon to reiterate his refusal to apologize to Shelby County DA Robby Owens for publicly castigating him regarding the LaSamuel Gamble case. Gee, Troy, when even your mentor Bob Riley says you should have handled this privately, you might want to consider SHUTTING UP.
“Given an option of [...]

Troy King: The Gift That Keeps On Giving

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

Dan reports that Troy will hold yet another press conference today:
Troy King will be holding a press conference today at 2:00pm to respond to the District Attorneys Association. According the the press release, members of the victim’s family will be joining him.
I’m starting to notice a pattern here.
Me too.
ADDENDUM: You may remember that 41 [...]

Drought Level Reduced from Stage 3 to Stage 2

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

The Birmingham Water Works today downgraded the area’s drought level from Stage 3 to Stage 2. That means we can all go back to running our sprinklers, washing our cars, taking really long showers, and generally wasting water till we find ourselves back in Stage 3 again. Meanwhile, perhaps the Water Works Board [...]
