Former City Councilor Indicted for Child Porn

Don McDermott, former Birmingham City Councilor for District 1, was indicted today on two federal counts of child pornography. He’s already under indictment in Jefferson County.

You may remember that McDermott was defeated after serving one term — by Joel Montgomery. It’s hard to believe, but in retrospect that looks like a step up.

  1. McDermott ran for Council the same year as my husband, and he beat the incumbent, who was a really great guy, with the help of an awful lot of racists. A politician who shall not be named because I refuse to type it, backed McDermott in District 1 and Johnson in District 2 (where my husband was running). Their entire campaign was based on being against Richard Arrington, which in the eastern area of Birmingham was the code word for black people in general. It was a nasty race and I was glad McDermott got beat even though I’m not too fond of his successor.

Everyone is innocent until proven guilty, but I must admit to a touch of Schadenfreude.
