Trent at Aladems reports that Sen. Charles Bishop (R-Jasper) punched Sen. Lowell Barron (D-Fyffe) on the Senate floor this afternoon. I thought things might get a bit tense on the last day of the session, but this is ridiculous — although not unprecedented. Bishop seems to have an ongoing anger management problem.
According to al.com, Bishop and Lowell were having an “animated conversation” when Bishop hit Barron in the face and Barron fell back onto a desk. Bishop’s excuse? He says Lowell called him an SOB.
“If he calls me that again, it’ll happen again,” Bishop said.
Barron was not immediately available for comment.
Sen. Bishop, to quote Buffy the vampire slayer, “Oh my God, are you twelve?”

UPDATE: Mike and Danny have posts up as well. Jeff too. Danny’s account says Bishop also tried to strangle Barron. Tim Lennox left a comment there that APT will have video on Capitol Journal tonight at 10:30 and also on Friday night’s For the Record (7 pm). Set your VCRs/TIVOs — it’ll be better than WWE!
Mine too =)
Thanks, Jeff. I’ll add the link.
The only reason somebody gets that hot about being called an S.O.B. is if they really are the “S.”of a “B.”. Now the only thing left to do is call in on the Hank Erwin Show and have a Jimmy Swaggert moment. Maybe they can do it live from the Creation Museum in Kentucky…and just hope that none of Bishop’s old far left cronies crash the party.

Far left cronies? It occurred to me that he might be out of sorts for mourning the passing of his hero, Jim Clark.
Last March a Montgomery worker noted that Bishop somehow managed to find very nice wives to abuse. That comment came after an earlier dustup with another Senator.
Now, how do I explain this to my grandson, who lives in Bishop’s district and had remarked after his first visit to the Legislature, “Government is sweet”?
When my grandson accompanied me went to Bishop’s office last Arise lobby day, he fortunately did not catch the snide tone of the secretary there, who looked at our Hispanic surname tags and asked, “what kind of name is that?” I responded that my grandson’s daddy and grandpa were born in Guatemala, and felt like adding–”they pay hefty taxes that go towards your salary, my dear.” Personally, it was a rellief to learn that the Senator was not in.
(Helen, I added a link to the NYT article on Jim Clark — Kathy)
That’s right Helen, he’s more of a George Wallace opportunist than a real believer in the rhetoric he espouses, which is even worse in many ways.
