That's how I feel about it, Don. If I were a legislator, I would probably vote for the bill you proposed, Rep. Todd. At the same time, I think hate crime legislation is a bad idea on purely ideological grounds. I also don't buy that "hate crime laws" are a deterrent to hate crimes. My view is that it should go, but if we have to have it, then sexual orientation should be included.

Representative Todd:

Ma’am, I’d like to point out, in case you’re not aware of it, that Representative Cam Ward had kind words about the impression you made on him @
http://www.politicalparlor.net/wp/posts-from-the-legislature/.

Also, I want to thank you for supporting HB263, Representative Mike Ball’s Initiative and Referendum constitutional amendment bill in general, and specifically by your vote in favor of it (part of the unanimous vote) as a member of the Constitution and Elections Committee.

If I may be so bold as to offer a suggestion: Many of those in both the legislature and the public at large who oppose the addition of “sexual orientation” to the State’s existing Hate Crimes Law have said that they do so because, among other things, that the current hate crimes law is getting too close to making certain types of “thought” punishable through legislation and they didn’t want to see the current law further enhanced. I would suggest making them put their money where their mouths seem to be by your initiating legislation next year to strike the current hate crimes law from the books, while at the same time still supporting the bill you did this session. Make them choose one way or the other.
