Pro-life advocates, such as Ambassador Alan Keyes, explain pro-life as being anti-death penalty for innocent life. However, for the convicted murderer, his capital punishment reafirms the sanctity of the innocent life he snuffed out.

Can capital punishment be abused? Like anything else where human beings are a factor. However, no State executes a swift capital sentence, which many, including wise old Solomon, believe contributes to growth in crime.

Though God knew that an innocent person could be unjustly punished (ie. Jesus), He saw the value gained for society by institutionalizing capital punishment. Perhaps the criminal justice system has become just a system and its core needs to be overhauled, instead of attacking a sympton of its imbalance.

This is Alabama, where over 70% of the population strongly supports the death penalty.

Thanks, Wheeler. You'd think when even the Birmingham News questions the application of the death penalty in Alabama, the legislature would take notice. Or not, I guess.

"I’m pretty sure that prosecutors “death qualify” juries, excluding those who would refuse to vote for the death penalty under any circumstances."

you're right; everyone on the jury is pro-death penalty to some degree.

"most criminal defendants in Alabama don’t have the resources to hire Johnny Cochran. Alabama jurors aren’t likely to be dazzled by the star power of defense attorneys."

the problem is more than just a lack of slick attorneys. the lack of resources means cases are often indequately investigated, which means the jury often sentences without hearing about relevent mitigating evidence.
