The Kooks Come Out of the Woodwork

Three universities and two public schools were shut down and evacuated today after receiving threats.  What is it about one crazy that encourages the others to come out in the open?

AUSTIN, Texas - Campus threats forced lock-downs and evacuations at universities in Texas, Oklahoma and Tennessee and two public schools in Louisiana on Tuesday, a day after a Virginia Tech student’s shooting rampage killed 33 people.

In Louisiana, parents picked up hundreds of students from Bogalusa’s high school and middle school amid reports that a man had been arrested Tuesday morning for threatening a mass killing in a note that alluded to the murders at Virginia Tech.

At least they caught the guy in Louisiana before he could follow through on his threat.  His note referenced the Virginia Tech shootings and blustered something along the lines of, “If you think that was bad, then you haven’t seen anything yet.”  Sounds like Del’s comment was spot on:

This “deadliest shooting in US history” thing is bothering me a lot. Last night WKRG was displaying a list of the other campus shootings with the number of people killed like it was the 100 meter record. I can’t help but think some freak is going to say, “Hell, 33 ain’t so many, I bet I can top that.”

It didn’t take long, did it?

People are just incredible. In credible.

Really. What is the disconnect that would make anyone believe threats like this are a legitimate way to get attention? I won’t even try to address the alienation that leads to the murder of 32 people.

It bothers me that what I consider my cavalier cynicism is apparently only a window into the thought processes of those who are batsh*t crazy. And this is with the SSRIs on board

Maybe you could hire out as a consultant for the police department, Del. They’d probably appreciate a heads up on what’s coming from the crazies. ;)

I am wondering if it’s against the covenants in my neighborhood to build a bunker and put in an arsenal? I swear, it’s enough to make you want to become a survivalist!

People see the attention that one event is getting and want the attention for their own actions.

Jennifer, maybe it’s time to stock up on some of those pickled food products (ick).

Yeah, ALmod, you’d think these folks would notice that the shooter is dead, and therefore unable to enjoy the attention, but that’s expecting far too much in the way of rationality.
