Tony Snow’s Cancer Is Back

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

Tony Snow’s colon cancer has recurred and spread to his liver.  I feel so badly for him and his family.  Been there, done that, and I hate to see anyone else have to go through it.  Please send good thoughts and prayers his way — that the treatment will be successful, and that he can [...]

Birmingham - Proudly Falling Behind Selma

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

Wheeler adds his voice, pointing out quite eloquently why a non-binding resolution matters to the city of Birmingham.
UPDATE:  Here’s the Birmingham News coverage, which includes a sad and telling comment from Councilor Roderick Royal:
“I’m concerned with the lobby for gay and lesbian rights that somehow or another this group insists on equating their movement with [...]

Busy Morning

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

I’m off to the Birmingham City Council meeting.  Here’s John Archibald’s column supporting Valerie Abbott’s inclusion resolution, which is supposed to be on this morning’s agenda.  Happy reading!  I’ll update after the meeting.

Senior Gonzales Aide Takes the Fifth

Monday, March 26th, 2007

This does not look good.
The senior counselor to Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales will refuse to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee in the unfolding U.S. attorneys scandal, invoking her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination, her attorneys said today.
Monica M. Goodling — who is on an indefinite leave of absence from Gonzales’s office — also [...]

Army Recruiter Sends Racist, Homophobic Emails…

Monday, March 26th, 2007

…from her military address.  I can’t begin to describe this disgusting display of ALL CAPS garbage; just head over to Pam’s and read for yourself.  If you need a little teaser, here’s a quote:
“GO BACK TO AFRICA AND DO YOUR GAY VOODOO LIMBO TANGO AND WANGO DANCE AND JUMP AROUND AND PRANCE AND RUN ALL [...]

Rethinking Stupid

Monday, March 26th, 2007

It’s good to see that the Jefferson County Commission is rethinking its incredibly short-sighted decision to pull out of the Storm Water Management Authority.  The Business Alliance for “Responsible” Development managed to pull the wool over the eyes of a majority of Commissioners last year, as well as the leadership of numerous cities in the [...]

Ron Sparks for Senate?

Monday, March 26th, 2007

UPDATE:  Daily Kos has picked up the story, and Dan weighs in as well.  And Danny.
I’ve been casting around for someone to challenge Jeff Sessions (R-AL) in the 2008 Senate race — someone with the good reputation and name recognition to, at the least, make a respectable showing in this far too red state.  Artur [...]

Inclusion Resolution Vote On Tuesday

Sunday, March 25th, 2007

On Tuesday, March 27, the Birmingham City Council will consider an Inclusion Resolution introduced by Councilor Valerie Abbott.  The Resolution is modeled on the National League of Cities Partnership for Working Toward Inclusive Communities.  It passed unanimously out of the Finance and Administration Committee and has been cleared by the city’s legal department.
Equality Alabama is urging [...]

Best Wishes To Tony Snow

Saturday, March 24th, 2007

Yeah, y’all don’t pass out from shock or anything.  Tony Snow is having surgery on Monday to remove a mass from his abdomen.  He had colon cancer two years ago, so his doctors want to be cautious even though tests show the mass is benign.
No matter who you are, this is scary stuff.  I wish [...]

Anonymous Recipient of NSL Speaks Out — As Best He Can

Saturday, March 24th, 2007

The Washington Post printed this anonymous editorial after confirming as much information as possible.
The Justice Department’s inspector general revealed on March 9 that the FBI has been systematically abusing one of the most controversial provisions of the USA Patriot Act: the expanded power to issue “national security letters.” It no doubt surprised most Americans to [...]
