Our country, in spite of an outstanding Pledge of Allegiance - has a long, demonstrated history of not showing a great amount of interest in attaining that goal.

[...] The majority of the Birmingham City Council today voted down an inclusion resolution introduced by Councilor Valerie Abbott. I expected some nasty rhetoric, but I’m shocked that the resolution didn’t pass. It was clear that the NO votes were prompted by the fact that the resolution condemned discrimination based on race, age, ancestry, creed, religion, gender, income, disability, national origin, and — God forbid — sexual orientation and gender identity. A copy of the proposed resolution is here.
[...] I’m off to the Birmingham City Council meeting. Here’s John Archibald’s column supporting Valerie Abbott’s inclusion resolution, which is supposed to be on this morning’s agenda. Happy reading! I’ll update after the meeting.
Valerie has always been VERY supportive of the GLBT community. She's also on my Board (Scenic Alabama) and really works hard to make Birmingham a better place. I'm going to try and go to the Council meeting. Beware - it could be literally hours before they get to the resolution, unless the Council president lets Valerie take it up early in the meeting. But don't let that stop you - it never hurts to see your government in action/inaction!
