Arthur Branch For President?

Well, if the Gipper can do it…

Former senator Fred Thompson, who has played DA Arthur Branch on Law & Order since 2002, is considering a run for the 2008 GOP presidential nomination, because he says there’s a dearth of “star power” among the current contenders.  He certainly sounds like a conservative’s wet dream:

On the issues, Thompson said he:

_Is “pro-life,” and believes federal judges should overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade abortion rights decision as “bad law and bad medical science.”

_Opposes gay marriage, but would let states decide whether to allow civil unions. “Marriage is between a man and a woman, and judges shouldn’t be allowed to change that.”

_Opposes gun control, and praised last week’s 2-1 federal appeals decision overturning a long-standing handgun ban. “The court basically said the Constitution means what it says.”

_Supports President Bush’s decision to increase troops in Iraq. “Wars are full of mistakes. You rectify them. I think we are doing that now,” he said. “We’ve got to give it a chance to work.”

_Would pardon former White House aide I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby’s conviction for perjury and obstruction of justice now, rather than waiting until all his appeals are exhausted.

I wonder if he’ll be held accountable for DA Branch’s occasional lapses into liberalism.  If nothing else, this should make for good TV.

Well, zero for five is pretty bad. He’s a much better fake DA than he was a real senator.

  2. Anna Says:

    Another actor as president? Great.

And says that RVW is “bad medical science?” That makes zero sense.

  3. Jennifer Says:

    Scary dude…

  4. Kathy Says:

Well, Anna, he’s not a doctor, but he plays one on…

Oh, wait, he doesn’t. Senate Republicans have a celebrated history of diagnosing without the facts. Terri Schiavo, anyone?

Maybe it’s just that he’s stayed at a Holiday Inn Express.

I can understand the argument that RvW is bad law, but Anna is right, “bad medical science” makes no sense.

“Wars are full of mistakes.” hee hee hee. For some reason that makes me laugh in a very black humor sort of way. Yep, they sure are!

[...] It sounds like James Dobson isn’t too happy that Fred Thompson is thinking about running for president.  Dobson called up reporter Dan Gilgoff at US News & World Report to proclaim that Thompson is not a Christian — and to heap praise on thrice-married serial adulterer Newt Gingrich.  Maybe this is a doctrinal difference, but it sounds like pure arrogance to me. “Everyone knows he’s conservative and has come out strongly for the things that the pro-family movement stands for,” Dobson said of Thompson. “[But] I don’t think he’s a Christian; at least that’s my impression,” Dobson added, saying that such an impression would make it difficult for Thompson to connect with the Republican Party’s conservative Christian base and win the GOP nomination.
