When All Else Fails, Suppress the Vote

I know, I know — winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing.

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — State investigators have linked a Republican campaign to letters sent to thousands of Southern California Hispanics warning them they could go to jail or be deported if they vote next month, a spokesman for the attorney general said.

…He declined to identify the specific Republican campaign Wednesday, citing the ongoing investigation. The Los Angeles Times and The Orange County Register both reported Thursday that the investigation appeared to be focused on the campaign of Tan D. Nguyen, a Republican challenger to Democratic U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez.

The letter, written in Spanish, tells recipients: “You are advised that if your residence in this country is illegal or you are an immigrant [emphasis added], voting in a federal election is a crime that could result in jail time.”

In fact, immigrants who are naturalized U.S. citizens can vote.

Yes, they can, unless they’re too intimidated to show up at the polls.

The two newspapers reported state investigators had found the location where the letters were printed and mailed to an estimated 14,000 Democratic voters [emphasis added] in central Orange County. The Los Angeles Times, citing an unnamed source, said authorities had interviewed Nguyen at his office.

Gee, what a surprise.  The letter went to 14,000 Democratic voters.  I’d be willing to bet that there are Hispanic people in Southern California who are registered to vote as Republicans or independents, but somehow their names were overlooked when it came time to send the letter.  Desperation is an ugly thing.

  1. The first time Loretta Sanchez ran for this seat. B-1 Bob Dornan was her opponent. He had guys dressed up to look like Border Patrol agents hanging around all these polling places to try and suppress the vote. He was eventually convicted and fined for his efforts. Hard to believe that the happiest place on earth, Disneyland, is in this district. Oh wait, nothing is hard to believe anymore.

You said it, sister! Every time I think the wingnuts can’t sink any lower, they prove me wrong.
