…and I feel fine. Jefferson County provisional ballots were certified today, and there was no change to the election results in House District 54. Patricia Todd is the first out lesbian elected to the Alabama legislature!
Gaynell Hendricks may still ask for a recount, but “elections officials have said a recount would likely not change the race, since questions on election night were answered before vote totals were made final”.
Congratulations, Patricia! I know you’ll be a great advocate for all your constituents. And I bet you’ll open a few closed minds in Montgomery.
It was already made official last Friday
True!
I didn’t think there could be 59 provisional ballots in District 54, and it turned out there were none.
That is really impressive. Particularly given some not so subtle attempts at smearing that were made against Ms. Todd. I had a chance to experience some of that smearing that was put on my car windshield in my church’s parking lot. (My church happens to be located in her district.) I suspect that many congregations in her district were all given that same “enlightened” guidance. So clearly there were people who voted for her in spite of those efforts. Congratulations.
I think Ms. Todd needs to be in our prayers. There will be a lot of pressure put on her by both conservatives and liberals.
Cindi, you are so right. There will be huge expectations on all sides.
