Supporters of a federal amendment to re-ban gay marriage couldn’t get the votes they needed for cloture today, so the issue is effectively dead for this session. I didn’t get to watch the proceedings, but I’m sure that stupidity abounded.
For instance, check out Susan’s post about Sen. James Inhofe and his holier-than-thou pronouncements about the “recorded history” of his family. He’s just inviting an investigative reporter to have a field day. And Sen. David Vitter of Louisiana had the gall to say, “I don’t believe there’s any issue that’s more important than this one.” Has he looked at the Gulf Coast lately?
Ladies and gentlemen, this is how the Senate is spending our tax dollars — protecting poor heterosexuals from the evil gays. Meanwhile, children in this country go without basic health care, the deficit runs rampant, corruption scandals erupt anew almost every day, Bush continues to issue “signing statements” saying he doesn’t have to follow the law if he doesn’t want to, and our servicepeople are still getting killed and maimed in Iraq and Afghanistan. It’s good to know our leadership has its priorities in order.

Oh, crap. I may have zapped you when I was deleting spam. You are most certainly not spam, but my eyes aren’t what they used to be. Please repost — sorry!
And I’m trying to remind myself that only 80% of the 38% of registered voters wanted this amendment. The other 62% couldn’t be stirred off their fannies to come out and protect us from the gays, so maybe that’s a good sign. Or maybe I’m just an incurable optimist…
